Lesson 1.7 · Unit 1 · Comparisons

More, less, the same and the most

Spanish compares in three ways: more or less, the same, and the most or least of all. First year gave you the first two. The superlative is new, and it uses the structure you already know with one small change: de instead of que. A single lesson covers all of them, with the four irregular forms that every student must learn.

The method
  1. More or less: más / menos + adjective + que. Marta es más alta que Ana. Mi hermano es menos serio que yo.
  2. Equal: tan + adjective + como. Soy tan alto como mi padre. The adjective stays in its form.
  3. Equal quantity: tanto / tanta / tantos / tantas + noun + como. Tengo tantos libros como tú. Tanto agrees with the noun.
  4. Four irregular comparatives. bueno → mejor, malo → peor, grande (age) → mayor, pequeño (age) → menor. They have the same form for masculine and feminine; the plural adds -es: mejores.
  5. The superlative: the article + más/menos + adjective + de. Marta es la más alta de la clase. Es el mejor libro del año. The article agrees with the noun.
  6. A number takes de, not que. Tengo más de diez libros. Menos de cinco euros.
  7. -ísimo is "very, very". Es carísimo. Es facilísimo. La película es buenísima. It agrees: -ísimo, -ísima, -ísimos, -ísimas, and a final vowel is dropped before it.
  8. Adverbs compare the same way. Corro más rápido que tú. Hablas tan bien como ella. The irregular adverbs are mejor and peor.

Where students lose marks: Más mejor (the double comparison), más que diez (a number takes de), tan libros como (the noun needs tantos), and el más alto que la clase (the superlative uses de). Choose the structure first (more, equal, most), then the particle (que, como, de).

Worked example

The problem. Compare Ana, Marta and Luis: Ana is 15, tall, has 8 books; Marta is 17, taller, has 12 books; Luis is 15, as tall as Ana, has 8 books. Write: (1) Marta is taller than Ana. (2) Luis is as tall as Ana. (3) Marta has more books than Ana. (4) Luis has as many books as Ana. (5) Marta is the oldest of the three. (6) Marta has more than ten books.

Step one: sentence 1. More than: más + adjective + que, and the adjective is feminine: Marta es más alta que Ana.

Step two: sentence 2. Equal adjective: tan + adjective + como: Luis es tan alto como Ana. Alto stays masculine because Luis is.

Step three: sentence 3. More of a noun: más libros que: Marta tiene más libros que Ana.

Step four: sentence 4. Equal quantity needs tanto to agree with libros: Luis tiene tantos libros como Ana.

Step five: sentence 5. The oldest is a superlative with mayor and de: Marta es la mayor de los tres.

Step six: sentence 6. A number uses de: Marta tiene más de diez libros.

Step seven: check particles. que, como, como, de, de: more and less use que, equal uses como, a superlative and a number use de.

Step eight: check. No más mejor, no que before a number, and tanto agrees with its noun.
